Walter Sotelo
Spiritual/Next Level Director/Evangelist
Director of Urban Ministries
Walter was born on 1973 in Bucaramanga, Colombia and raised in a wealthy Roman
Catholic home. After the tragic kidnapping of his father in Bogotá, Colombia, at the age
of 12, Walter’s mother decided to sell all of her possessions and immigrate to the united
States, Where she settle in Miami. Struggling with the language barrier and the anger
and bitterness dwelling in his heart from the loss of his father, Walter was drawn into the
gangs of South Florida.
After several years of reckless living, he accepted an invitation from his mother to attend
church on Mothers Day in 1990. While at Iglesia Biblica de Miami (a daughter church of
Manhattan Bible Church, NY), under the preaching of Pastor Michael Rodriguez, Walter
received the Lord as his personal Savior.
Through the encouragement of his pastor and the support of his new church family,
Walter enrolled in Word of Life Bible institute in winter of 1991. During his first year at
WOL, the spirit of God began to transform Walter’s life, as well as, call him into ministry
in NYC. During the summers of 1992-93, Walter interned at the Manhattan Bible
Church and served with the youth. In the fall of 1992, Walter was introduced to Victoria
Mahairas. After discovering the connection they shared through the ministry of Tom
Mahairas, a friendship began to grow. In 1996, Walter graduated from Liberty
University with a double major in Pastoral Studies and Spanish. He began working for
Manhattan Christian Academy as the Junior High bible and history teacher. Six months
later, the elders of Manhattan Bible church offered Walter a full time position as the
youth director of the church. In the summer of 1996, Walter and Victoria were married.
They served the youth, their families, and the unchurched youth of the community.
In March 2001, after five years of exciting ministry as youth director, Walter stepped
aside from his role at Manhattan Bible Church. He is currently working alongside Tom
Mahairas at CitiVision. Walter is the Director of Urban Ministries. He leads College,
High School and Junior High teams in Mission trips to NYC. Walter continues to
actively preach and teach the Word in Manhattan Bible Church and around the World.
Walter is passionate about reaching the lost with the love of God. He is exploring an
innovative way of reaching a generation that has not found compassion and community
in the Church.
Walter and Victoria have two children, Sophia and Luciano. They live in the Bronx and
serve the community that they both love, Washington Heights/Inwood in NYC.
